Homan says Minnesota’s anti-immigration crusade is over
Federal authorities say the sweeps focused on Minneapolis-St. The Metro Paul area led to the arrests of more than 4,000 people. While the Trump administration described those detained as “illegal aliens and dangerous criminals,” several people without criminal records, including children and U.S. citizens, were also detained.
Democratic Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday that he expects Operation Metro Surge to be over in “days, not weeks and months,” based on his conversations with senior officials in the Trump administration. He told reporters that he spoke this week with Homan and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wells.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also said he had a “positive meeting” with Homan on Monday and discussed the possibility of withdrawing more federal officers.
Homan took over the Minnesota operation in late January after a second fatal shooting by federal immigration agents and amid growing political backlash and questions about how the operation was run.
“We are in a position of great confidence but verification,” Walz said, adding that he expects to hear more from the administration “in the next day or so” about the future of what he described as an “occupation” and “revenge campaign” against the state.
Officials at the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment on the governor’s statements.
Walz said he had no reason not to believe Homan’s statement last week that 700 federal officers would leave Minnesota immediately, but the governor added that still leaves 2,300 on Minnesota streets. At the time, Homan cited an “unprecedented increase in cooperation” that led to the need for fewer federal officers in Minnesota, including help from prisons that hold inmates who could be deported.
