Africa: The Somali President and the Egyptian Defense Minister attend the formation of the Egyptian forces participating in the African Union mission


Cairo – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Lieutenant General Abdel Majeed Saqr, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces and Minister of Defense, attended the formation of Egyptian forces participating in the African Union Stabilization Support Mission in Somalia (AUSOM), the Egyptian army spokesman said on Wednesday.

The spokesman said in a statement that the ceremony confirmed Cairo’s continued participation in African peace and security efforts, especially in supporting Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity and institutional stability within the framework of the African Union.

The ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, and senior military commanders.

During the visit, officials were briefed on the preparation and equipment procedures for the participating units, which the army said showed a high level of operational and combat readiness in various branches and specializations.

The program also included conducting training activities and displaying vehicles designated for the mission.

According to the statement, the deployed forces have completed advanced professional training to ensure their ability to efficiently carry out the tasks assigned to them under different operational conditions.

Egypt has long contributed to international peacekeeping operations, with officials confirming that participation in African Union missions reflects Cairo’s commitment to supporting the pillars of regional and international peace and security.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received President Mahmoud in Cairo on Sunday. During their discussions, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s firm support for Somalia’s unity, security, and territorial integrity, stressing Cairo’s rejection of any measures that would undermine the stability or sovereignty of the Somali state.
