Africa: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission stressed the “urgent need for institutional reform and the necessity of peace and development on the continent” at the opening session of the 48th Executive Council of the African Union
At the opening session of the 48th Executive Council of the African Union, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency @ymahmoudali, stressed the “urgent need for institutional reform, and the imperative for peace and development on the continent” ahead of the 39th Assembly of the African Union.
About #water and sanitation; This year’s theme, he stressed, is that it “must be protected as a shared resource and a driver of cooperation” amid climate change.
He added that “reforms are progressing within the framework of the 2024-2028 plan,” including progress on the peace and security architecture, sustainable financing, and strengthening institutions.
While noting that “Gabon and Guinea have returned to constitutional order,” he warned that “instability and terrorism still persist in parts of the continent.”
He reiterated that “the institutions of the African Continental Free Trade Area and the African Union remain pivotal in driving integration,” supported by innovative financing and stronger partnerships with the private sector and civil society in Africa.
He concluded his speech by emphasizing that “focused leadership and strategic priorities will determine our success.”
The President thanked the Republic of Angola for its leadership of the Executive Council. Angola is the current president of the African Union.
